SEE + DO

|   Copenhagen  |

Don't miss these incredible Copenhagen museums, cultural landmarks and local experiences.

Iconic Landmarks ...

In Copenhagen, dramatic modern architecture blends artfully with ancient buildings throughout the city. The Black Diamond (Den Sorte Diamant) is one of the most eye-catching modern buildings on Copenhagen’s waterfront. Completed in 1999 by Danish architects Bjarne Hammer, Kim Holst Jensen, Morten Holm and Morten Schmidt as an extension of the Royal Library, the building contains an impressive collection of over 4.5 million books. Another iconic local landmark is The Opera House (Operaen) which seats over 1,400 people and plays host to the city’s best opera, musical and cultural performances. The Opera House was designed by Danish Architect, Henning Larsen, and is one of Copenhagen’s most beautiful modern structures, where the sculptures within the foyer change colour according to the weather. The royal winter residence of Queen Margrethe and the Danish royal family since 1794, Amalienborg Palace is one of Copenhagen’s most important tourist attractions. Four identical palaces encircle a grand octagonal courtyard (originally the palaces were built for four noble families) - today two of these can be visited by the public. The palaces’ stunning rococo interiors are a Copenhagen highlight - and don’t miss the statue of King Frederik V in the courtyard, considered one of the world’s finest equestrian statues. An internationally-recognised landmark, the Little Mermaid statue (Den Lille Havfrue) was commissioned in 1913 by Carlsberg brewing magnate, Carl Jacobsen. The Little Mermaid can be found perched on a rock on Copenhagen’s waterfront wistfully looking out to sea and has become an icon of the city. Prima Ballerina Ellen Price was the artistic inspiration for the mermaid’s face, while the body was modelled after the sculptor’s wife after Price refused to model nude.

Shopping in Copenhagen ...

Copenhagen is a shopping mecca for cutting-edge designer homewares, furniture and fashion. If you have a limited amount of time and want a one-stop shopping experience, head to Illum, Copenhagen’s upscale department store located in Copenhagen’s main pedestrian shopping street in the city centre. This is where you’ll find the best in Danish and international fashion, beauty and homewares, and the luxury supermarket in the basement level sells local Danish gourmet products--caramels, honey, cookies and more. Sister-store Illums Bolighus is a legendary design store nearby which is a “shrine to Scandinavian design”. Normann is another popular design boutique located in a former cinema in the district of Osterbro, filled with Danish and Scandinavian furniture, fashion and homewares.

Museums & Art Galleries ...

One of the most visited galleries in Denmark is the Louisiana Museum For Moderne Kunst, which lies on the banks of the Øresund Sound 40 minutes from Copenhagen by train. With an impressive collection dating from World War II to the present day, the Louisiana Museum’s modern architecture is an attraction in its own right, while works by Picasso, Lichtenstein, Warhol and Henry Moore are amongst the artistic highlights. Copenhagen’s impressive Nationalmuseet (National Museum) is the country’s largest museum of cultural history and tells the story of Denmark from 14,000 years ago to the present day. Covering every aspect of Denmark’s fascinating history from Ice Age hunters and Vikings to priceless national treasure’s, highlights of the collection include one of the world’s oldest paintings by South American indians, the Trundholm Sun Chariot and intricate bronze age helmets. The Designmuseum (Danish Museum of Art & Design) is Denmark’s largest museum for Danish and international design and hosts regular exhibitions about Scandinavian industrial design and applied arts. Works by acclaimed Danish designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Georg Jensen are represented here, and the museum’s Design Shop is an excellent place to pick up some cool souvenirs and design objects. Statens Museum for Kunst (Denmark’s National Gallery) is set within a green leafy park in central Copenhagen and boasts a large collection of work by leading international artists, including Picasso and Matisse, along with the works of great Danish artists. With a collection dating from the 14th century to the present day, discover Renaissance works by Mantegna, Titian and Rubens while exploring the history of Danish art through the ages. To learn more about Copenhagen’s modern art scene, we recommend that you visit the Arken Museum For Moderne Kunst (Modern Art Museum) which is located in the outlying beach town of Koge Bugt, located 10 kilometers south west of Copenhagen. Set within a white ship-like building by architect Soren Lund, you’ll find an accomplished collection of contemporary international and Danish art.

Tivoli Gardens ...

The Tivoli Gardens is an Alice in Wonderland-style entertainment space in central Copenhagen with a fairy tale ambiance of colourful landscaped gardens, upscale dining restaurants, an amusement park and live performance theatres. Dating back to 1893, the Tivoli Gardens inspired Walt Disney’s Disneyland. You may also bump into Copenhagen’s royal family while you’re there, who can be found regularly visiting the gardens.

Scenic Boat Tour ...

Taking a scenic boat trip through the picturesque canals and waterways of central Copenhagen is a fantastic way to see the city’s best landmarks positioned along the waterfront, including the spectacular Opera House, the Black Diamond, Christianshavn and the vibrant Nyhavn Harbour - Copenhagen’s ancient harbour filled with boats and lined with colourful buildings, outdoor cafes and restaurants. You’ll also discover Copenhagen’s iconic statue, the Little Mermaid, which was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen in 1913 (the Carlsberg brewery magnate) and designed by sculptor Edvard Eriksen.

Copenhagen By Bicycle ...

As Copenhagen is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world, you can also rent a bicycle from any of the City Bike stands located throughout the city for a refundable fee. Enjoy a leisurely cycle along the canals and central harbourfront, the picturesque district of Christianshavn, the vibrant Nyhavn Harbour (Copenhagen’s ancient harbour), and districts of Norrebro and Frederiksberg.

Best Green Spaces ...

Kongens Have or ‘Kings Gardens’ is Denmark’s oldest royal garden, and is visited by over 2 million people every year. The fairytale-like Rosenburg Castle with its turrets and stone lion statues overlooks the Castle’s once-private gardens, but today guests are free to explore the sprawling green spaces - perfect for a summertime picnic. Visit the Renaissance and Baroque gardens, enjoy a rolling programme of art installations or simply wander the tree-lined avenues.

Arne Jacobsen Architecture ...

Designer, architect and landscape gardener, Arne Jacobsen was one of the most influential designers in Denmark’s history. The Radisson Blue Royal Hotel was completed in 1960 and is considered to be one of Jacobsen’s greatest achievements. One of the city’s tallest skyscrapers, the hotel has been modernised since it was first built, however, you can still visit the hotel’s room 606 which retains Jacobsen’s original design. Copenhagen’s National Bank was one of the designer’s last major project before he died in 1971, located on Copenhagen’s waterfront. To see some other examples of Jacobsen’s work, take a road trip to the coastal suburb of Klampenborg to visit the Jacobsen Restaurant, Bellavista Housing Estate & the Petrol Station - one of the most funky, futuristic petrol stations in Denmark.
